Classical new-build, Weybridge

Introduction

Newnham was a remarkable achievement in planning gain. Originally a 2,000ft semi detached property on a large golf course plot on the famous St Georges Hill in Weybridge, Surrey.

The Brief

Design By UBER was instructed to design a property of circa 20,000ft to sit centrally within the plot and to help the developer to deliver a property that maximised the use of light, retained the grandeur of an English home for an International buyer whilst at the same time creating a sense of flow between the spaces.

Details & Specific Points of Interest

First and foremost we looked at the arrival point to such a grand home and the needs of the international market. There are some specific points to this very first stage. It’s important that guests can be shown immediately into an arrival room, somewhere to be seated whilst the host is preparing and it is key that this is situated close to the study so that meetings can be conducted without having to journey through the family section of the home. Keeping the two separate, we looked at dividing the property in two halves, almost a guest side and a family side, linked by a very grand hallway with feature domed ceiling and bridged with central walkways with 3 metre tall burnished doors embellished by stingray skin handles.

This house really was designed with entertaining in mind, from the sweeping underground garage, designed to accommodate catering vehicles for parties, to terraces, to wine cellars and a spectacular central bar over looking a pool.

The kitchen was a key aspect to our design focus and all walls revolve around a central eliptical island. Guest arrive to a stunning peninsular with every conceivable element of luxury provided including coffee machines and snack pantry. The cooking side was designed like a theatre with all of the equipment and facilities for a first class performance as well as a back of house kitchen designed for more aromatic cooking.

At first floor level the accommodation was equally well considered. The master bedroom, overlooking the golf course, was flanked by his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms complete with perfumery cabinets. Children’s bedrooms, as well as nanny accommodation and of course guest bedrooms, all with ensuites completed the first floor whilst additional staff accommodation was designed in to the lower ground space.

With that in mind we focussed on switching the guest bedroom and master, pinching some space from one to give to the other and in doing so created a sequence of double doors, lobby area, his and hers dressing rooms and bathrooms and an approach into the bedroom that drew the eye, created a real feature along the way in wall panelling, ceiling detail and fundamentally allowed you to arrive in a beautifully well scaled room at the right side of the bed so that you could enjoy the full attention of the bespoke, oversized headboard.

Design by UBER created stunning, bespoke cabinetry in each of the dressing rooms, a full glazed wall leading from ‘her’ dressing room into an indulgent bathroom in calacatta slabs.

Further bespoke cabinetry adorned many areas of the house, not least in the study where custom desks in high gloss oak matched perfectly to wall cabinetry and sideboards. Border details in the study flowed through into the hallway with its feature stone staircase and hand made iron balustrading.

Each room benefitted from the same level of detail and finish not least the wonderful bar area with temperature controlled walk-in wine room designed to maximise storage. The tasting room was surrounded by bronzed panels offset from a wall of mirrored bronze. A semi-circular lounging arrangement was flanked by matching bronze fretwork panels and cut glass pendants lights completed the mood.
