Family Arts & Crafts-style restoration

This long standing Edwardian family home built in an Arts & Crafts style was bought by our client with the vision to modernise the original tired interior as well as tone down some of the more exuberant style choices from the previous owner.

The Brief

To achieve this modernised family home, we planned on opening up the main living spaces and flood these areas with more natural light. Our client also required a study as well as a dedicated entertainment space for hosting friends and family in comfort and luxury.

Points of Interest

With next to no natural light able to get through to the entry way of the property it originally felt like a very small, dark and dingy space.

To maximise the transformation of this area we removed the wall that separates the entrance hall from the kitchen and day living and added glass partitions and crittall doors where the original wall once stood. This area has now completely transformed.

When entering this home you’re now able to see straight through the day-living area, past the dining orangery and over the new glass edged balcony that overlooks the garden.

The new crittall glass partitions flood natural light from the kitchen and day living area, through to the entrance hall creating a light and airy feel as you enter the home.

Before and after of the Dining Area

To create more living space, a two-story extension was added to the rear of the property, extending off  from the from the newly refurbished kitchen. This space now houses a radiant glass-encased dining orangery.

The orangery is enclosed by additional crittall glass partitions which creates closed off zones whilst still allowing natural light through to the surrounding areas. Directly beneath this the extension provides extra leisure space for a newly appointed gym.

Relaxing

Descending downstairs to the basement level we encounter the largest visual change and rearrangement to the use of space.

The primarily singular large room to the back of the house with awkward support pillars was previously used to house gym equipment, a pool table and was a general space for overflow storage.

Entertainment Basement

We divided the large room in two, one side being a dedicated relaxing media space with flexible mood lighting, multiple large corner sofas creating a social yet cosy atmosphere -see the Before/After below. The bespoke media unit is the rooms central focus finished with a metallic polished plaster surround, as well as containing a ribbon fireplace edged with thinly ribbed ebony wood panelling.

The other side of the room houses an elegant, elevated bar along with an open space dedicated for dancing, as well as a pool table and poker area. These rooms are cleverly partitioned by two wine cabinets made of glass which frame the double doorway.

Home Bar Elegance

When descending the stairs down to this newly refurbished moody ground floor the side profile of the bar is peeked at via a glorious large tease window to entice you to journey on to see the art deco inspired bar in all of its grandeur.

Almost all of our residential home interiors has demand for a bar area and we love to indulge the design brief in this personal space. It doesn’t have to be with alcohol, juice bars can be a fun twist.

Before and after of the Cinema & Entertainment

Gym extension

The rest of the basement originally accommodated a purely functional utility room, an area for additional storage as well as a quaint outside WC. This area has now been revolutionised with an extension that houses a new state-of-the-art, air-conditioned gym that now overlooks the property’s grounds.

A separate sauna and steam room, refurbished utility room as well as transforming the former outside WC into a luxurious connected powder room.

The Upper Floors

Ascending the newly transformed staircase to the first floor you pass the intricate stained-glass windows that beam down shards of technicoloured light onto the floor below. These windows have been restored to their former glory which honours this beautiful property’s history.

The newly refurbished lavish master suite incorporates a large walk-in wardrobe and dressing room, frosted double doors hiding a luxurious ensuite with separate sauna and shower rooms. There is also an intimate double seating area which is situated under a large window that looks out onto the home’s grounds, the perfect cosy place to curl up with a book and watch the world go by.

Master Bedroom Suite

The connecting dressing room simply required a minimum and cost-effective revamp to bring the underlying structure up to date.

Along with new fitted door finishes, inlay colour, handles and a reupholstered ottoman, we further enhanced the look with a new dressing table ensemble and decorative ceiling light.

A simple way to completely maximise the impact and add a touch of luxury to the room so it’s in keeping with the rest of the suite.

Ensuite Bathroom Update Tweaks

After expanding the entrance doors, the master bathroom suite was completely modernised to feel, as briefed, “like a luxurious boutique hotel” the entire space has been fitted with large-format, marble-effect ceramic tiles, discrete LED mood lighting as well as a refit of the shower/steam-room and WC.

A showpiece Antonio Lupi basin has been fitted to compliment the large free-standing curved bathtub.

Our young male client wanted the home to be able to function as both a family-friendly relaxation space and a smart entertaining for get-togethers. We made a few suggested alterations to the function and structure and we believe it’s paid dividends to the overall flow and usability of the home. Especially the use of crittall glass doors to the entrance hall and living space as well as new dining zone, making sure precious natural light is abundant.
