Consider furniture & storage

Store items that you use only for dining in a dresser or sideboard if space allows. As a result, more precious pieces are kept away from the daily hustle of the kitchen, such as crystal and fine china. Also consider opting for a shallow piece so it doesn’t take up too much floor area.

Lighting proportions

In order to achieve successful dining room lighting, it is important to focus the light onto the table’s centre. This adds intimacy and draws your diners into the table.

Use fixtures that covers half to three quarters of the length of your table and hangs 75 – 90cm above the table.

Choose the correct rug

Choose a rug that is larger than your dining room table, that can allow for chairs to move away from the table without moving off of the rug. This is crucial when creating a balance in the space. A rug that is too small will be dwarfed by your dining table and chairs, while a rug that is too large can overwhelm the space.

Due to the nature of the room, the quality of the rug’s materials is paramount. Consider premium materials, such as wool and natural fibre blends.

Choose suitable seating

When it comes to dining chairs, comfort is key, which is why upholstered designs are preferable, with supportive backs and arms. Invest in fabrics that are stain-resistant, wipeable, or make loose covers that can easily be removed for cleaning.

A bench is a great alternative when space is limited, as it can be tucked under the table when not in use.
