Arts & Crafts New Family Home

This project near Sutton Coldfield offered a unique opportunity for our designers to work their magic on an Arts and Crafts style property.

When Design by UBER were approached to get involved with the project, the site had been cleared of the existing property and planning approval had been granted for a new build.

Our space planning expertise was called upon to elevate the plans to the next level and we also set to work creating a full interior design scheme that was sympathetic to the architectural style of the property.

The Brief

The brief was to support the architect and client to space plan, as well as create a full turnkey interior design solution for the entire property which offers elements of glamour throughout whilst ensuring it is robust enough for the practicalities of family living.

We were also instructed to fully fit and finish every element of the scheme from cabinetry to soft furnishings with a specific requirement to create a social space for our client to store, sample and enjoy their collection of fine wines.

Within the interior of the house, our designers initially turned their attention to the space planning, with a particular focus on the first-floor accommodation.

On the ground floor the orientation of the property naturally dictated the positioning of the kitchen and day living area in the south-facing part of the property. However, the first floor required careful consideration as the initial plans did not allow for a natural flow through the space.

Reconfigured Master Suite

Our objective was to ensure the master suite had a natural and prominent position, rendering it immediately identifiable.

With this end in mind, the plans were adapted to reconfigure the master and guest bedrooms and, in so doing, we were able to develop a spectacular master suite encompassing a lobby area, his and her dressing rooms and bathrooms as well as the bedroom itself.

The study cabinetry is crafted in high gloss grey stained oak, with inset lighting details to the shelves and faux leather panel details. The focal point of the room is a high gloss partner desk with shadow gaps and inlaid leather writing pads.

The floor finish was chosen to compliment the cabinetry finishes, whilst a rug in light grey subtly defines the area around the partner desk and swivel chair. Complimentary occasional chairs are adorned in a contrasting light grey faux suede to create an overall ambience of calm refinement.

The ground floor was configured to accommodate a number of formal entertaining spaces whilst a more relaxed, informal feel is cultivated in the kitchen/family room.

With this in mind, a clear air of understated elegance  runs through the drawing room. The dark stained timber floor forms a rich contrast to the walls in muted tones of pale grey whilst the U-shaped sofa, which sits upon a bespoke-made wool and faux silk geometric patterned rug, offering a touch of formality to the seating arrangement.

Light shades and accessories in varying tones of antiqued brass add warmth and a feeling of stylish comfort whilst the carefully considered soft furnishings give unity to the scheme.

The dining room is approached via a lobby space which is designed with a feature mirrored wall in a combination of silver, antique and bronze mirror finishes, adding a sense of drama to the room.

The tones used in the dining room bare a close relationship to those used in the drawing room bringing together the more formal rooms of the house.

The space is deceptively simple in style with two pieces of statement art on the walls and a stunning over table cut crystal chandelier framing the dining table.

The dining area is further defined by a bespoke rug of wool and faux silk which also matches the rug in the drawing room again in a striking geometric design.

Whilst the open plan kitchen and family room forms the less formal part of the living accommodation, warm accent tones allow for continuity with the more formal rooms.

Dark stained double doors open from the hallway into a room that is designed to flood with natural light from the floor to ceiling glazed doors which offer stunning views over the garden.  A feature pendant is set into a circular recessed ceiling area over the dining table highlighting it as a focal point in the room.

Throughout the space, our designers used lighting to great effect to help define the separate zonal spaces, whilst the layering of fabrics and accessories, with accents of yellow ochre, ensures a natural flow between the seating and kitchen areas.

Ascending the marble staircase to the 1st Floor

The first-floor master suite now holds a central position off the landing, offering a pleasing symmetry to the first-floor accommodation after our reconfiguration.

The suite comprises a lobby decorated in soothing tones of beige and navy, his and hers dressing rooms and en-suite bathrooms as well as the master bedroom.

These impressive array of rooms are designed with a soothing but distinctly opulent tone. Bespoke cabinetry is used to great effect with the perfect example being the ladies’ dressing room which is created with a high gloss chocolate stained oak frame inlaid with fabric panels and bronze detailing.

The sense of understated glamour is reinforced with the use of large format marble floor tiles, atmospheric lighting and a faux suede chair in a decadent shade of rich blue.

A feature glazed door with a bronze frame offers a tantalising glimpse of the bathroom beyond.

The master bedroom itself offers a further change of tone and has the feel of a luxury hotel suite. Complementary shades of grey and dark blue create a soothing atmosphere whilst the silk effect carpet adds a touch of indulgence.

The oversized bed and bespoke designed headboard dominate the space and the strategic placement of accessories and soft furnishings in a rich blue adds depth to the scheme.

Basement Entertainment

The basement houses the leisure and entertainment suite which offers a distinct change in tone with darker and more atmospheric hues. When entering the basement guests are welcomed into the bar and wine tasting area which is designed as a relaxed, social space.

To one side of the bar a curved sofa is set against an antiqued mirror panelled wall, whilst the farther side plays host to a spectacular wine room complete with a bespoke made bar in stained oak as well as a wine tasting table.

The separate spaces are gently delineated with the artful use of recessed ceiling details herringbone timber flooring and a stunning bronze fretwork screen.

Beyond this, guests can glimpse the pool table area and media room which is decorated in the same tones as the bar to ensure an effortless synergy between the spaces

The journey through the house culminates in the swimming pool area.  Here we created a space which is reminiscent of a chalet spa – a place to escape the pressures of modern day living and simply wind down .

A seating area boasts glazed bifolding doors which open out to the garden, whilst the swimming pool itself offers an oasis of calm.

A number of elements combine to create the overall ambience – wood effect tiles on the walls, soft lighting from the up down lighters and the waterfall slot details in the wall.
