The brief

The brief for the ground floor of this family home was to improve spatial flow, maximise natural light, and update the overall aesthetic by introducing warmth, colour, depth, and a sense of soul. The clients wanted a designer-led approach that would deliver an elevated, Hotel-quality interior while still feeling comfortable and personal.

Duration

6 Months

Capturing the essence of living in luxury without losing the feeling of home.

This vision was applied consistently across the main spaces, including a snug designed as a calm, intimate retreat for relaxation, a formal living room for hosting guests and family, and a kitchen, dining, and day living area conceived as a connected, multifunctional hub that supports both everyday living and social interaction. The central aim was to create a contemporary yet comfortable aesthetic through refined materials and carefully considered lighting that enhances the atmosphere throughout the day, while also improving layout efficiency and spatial relationships. Overall, the brief called for a thoughtfully considered redesign that elevates the functionality, flow, and emotional quality of the home.

The Art of Blending

A key part of the brief was to retain and celebrate much-loved existing furniture that the owners were not prepared to part with. Rather than designing around these pieces as constraints, we embraced them as opportunities. A cherished cabinet was carefully integrated into the scheme, becoming an anchor for the room’s colour palette and overall composition. This approach highlights the art of blending old with new; layering character, history, and sentiment with more refined, contemporary elements. The result is a space that feels deeply personal, balanced, and thoughtfully curated.

Refined Finishes

To complete the snug’s transformation, attention turned to the key visual and atmospheric elements: the bespoke media wall, materials, colours, and textures. Together, these elements create a cohesive and inviting environment, bringing function, style, and personality to the space. The following sections explore how the media wall was designed as a focal point and how the curated palette and textures enhance the snug’s warmth and intimacy.

Bespoke Media Wall

Before; A dark office room with a wooden desk, chairs, and a printer. A potted plant adds greenery. Open door leads to hallway with framed art on the wall. After: Modern living room with neutral tones, featuring a built-in shelving unit displaying decorative items, a flat-screen TV, and a soft-lit ambiance.

A bespoke media wall was introduced to enhance both function and aesthetic. Designed to harmonise with the existing furniture and the overall room layout, it provides a strong visual focal point while supporting everyday use. The media wall anchors the space, balancing technology with design, and contributes to the snug’s identity as a distinct, purposeful area within the home. Thoughtful proportions, finishes, and detailing ensure it integrates seamlessly without overwhelming the intimate scale of the room.

A Curated Scheme

The snug’s colours, textures, and materials were carefully considered to create warmth, depth, and a sense of calm. Rich, earthy tones are layered with softer neutrals, while plush upholstery, a soft rug, timber accents, and subtle metallic gold details add tactile interest and visual depth. Layered lighting allows the atmosphere to shift seamlessly from bright, welcoming daytime energy to a cozy, intimate evening mood. Together, these elements combine to produce a space that feels inviting, personal, and balancing.

A Space Reimagined

To transform the sitting room, we refined proportions and improved spatial clarity by building a new wall to separate it from the kitchen. This key intervention created a more intimate and purposeful setting, allowing the room to function as a distinct retreat within the home. The result is a space that feels both grounded and considered. Offering a sense of calm while still connecting naturally to the wider layout.

Curated Furniture & Styling

With a previously disjointed furniture arrangement, the focus was on creating cohesion and balance. We provided styling guidance to curate an elevated living space, drawing on the comfort and refinement of a luxury hotel while avoiding an overly commercial feel. Through careful selection, placement, and proportion, the furniture now works harmoniously, supporting both social interaction and quiet relaxation.

Material Palette and Lighting

A softer, neutral palette with blue accents was introduced, layered with texture to bring warmth and depth without heaviness. Updated finishes and carefully considered lighting enhance the atmosphere throughout the day, shifting seamlessly from bright and airy to warm and intimate. The team, carefully sourced products to fit the needs of the client, the result is a balanced, breathable space where natural light plays a central role, and every element contributes to a cohesive and inviting environment.

Spatial Planning & Flow

Natural light was a defining feature, amplified by the property’s bifold doors and skylight, yet the space initially lacked both character and cohesion. The brief was to transform it into a central hub, open yet clearly defined, balancing practicality with warmth and a strong sense of sociability.

The layout was carefully reconfigured to establish a clear spatial hierarchy while preserving a feeling of openness. Each zone was thoughtfully articulated without disrupting the overall connection between areas. Circulation was enhanced to ensure ease of movement, allowing the space to support both everyday routines and social gatherings. Subtle openings and carefully considered sightlines guide a natural, intuitive flow throughout.

Cook

The kitchen had already been commissioned, so our role centred on elevating and refining the existing design rather than altering its core layout. Through carefully considered lighting and subtle styling interventions, we enhanced both the atmosphere and overall cohesion of the space.

Layered lighting was introduced to add depth and softness, transforming the kitchen from a purely functional area into a more inviting, ambient setting. Alabaster pendant lights were installed above the island, creating a warm focal point and enhancing the overall mood.

This approach allows the space to transition effortlessly from everyday use to a relaxed, sociable environment for entertaining, bringing added warmth, atmosphere, and a greater sense of harmony to the scheme.

Dine

The dining space was conceived as a setting for both everyday meals and more formal gatherings. We sourced all elements within the scheme, from the dining chairs and statement lighting to the wall art and decorative accessories, carefully curating each piece to bring depth and cohesion. Once an empty area lacking identity, it has been transformed into a space with warmth, character, and a strong sense of purpose.

Positioned to feel connected yet distinct, the dining area benefits from the openness of the wider layout while maintaining its own presence. Proportion, placement, and lighting were thoughtfully considered, with each element working together to create a balanced, inviting environment that elevates the overall dining experience.

Unwind

The day living area was designed as a relaxed and informal zone, supporting everyday comfort and connection within the open-plan layout. A key feature is the bespoke media wall, formed within the newly built dividing wall that separates it from the sitting room. Making use of a natural recess, the design was carefully developed to sit seamlessly within the wall’s depth, creating a clean, integrated finish.

Beyond its strong visual presence, the media wall incorporates practical concealed storage, enhancing both functionality and organisation. Its considered proportions and refined detailing ensure it feels fully embedded within the architecture rather than applied, reinforcing a sense of cohesion across the space.

As part of the wider social hub, this area was designed in response to the clients’ desire for a place where they could truly relax while still feeling connected. It allows for easy interaction between everyday activities, whether one family member is cooking while another unwinds in front of the television; bringing together comfort, connection, and a sense of togetherness within a calm, uncluttered setting.
